Sisterhood [without the Drama]

August 24, 2010  |  Uncategorized

Remember the scene from Mean Girls where teachers place all of the girls in the gymnasium to teach them a lesson from their cattiness and drama?

While one teacher tells them to close their eyes, she says:
“I want you to raise your hand if you’ve ever had a girl say something bad about you behind your back.”

As every girl raises her hand, she says:
“Now, close your eyes again. And this time, I want you to raise your hand if you have ever said anything about a friend behind her back.”

Looking around, all of the girls see each other’s hands raised and realize that they’ve all encountered the same thing.

What woman doesn’t want to live in a “Drama-Free Zone”? Does such a place exist?

Just the thought of those three words brings peace to my soul! I slouch at my desk sporting the kind of comfy clothes I don’t dare wear in public, and I know I’m in a safe place. No drama – just peace.

Why? Maybe because I’m alone and not in a room with fifty other women! I wonder, “If this peace exists in my own home, why can’t peace exist in a place where young women gather?”

The concept is idealistic to be sure – to be a part of a sisterhood, a group of women where drama doesn’t exist. But the question remains: Why can’t that be real? Who says that this idea cannot exist? Please show me where in the rulebook it says that women can’t get along.

Perhaps movies and television shows have infiltrated our minds into thinking that we as women will always be dramatic. Mean Girls shows us just how catty we can be. While a sad scene in the movie, it’s equally sobering because we all can relate!

You remember, don’t you?

Oh, those prior hurts and wounds from the backstabbing suffered at the hands of other women. I can look back at those times in my life if I try really hard. But for many, it isn’t so distant of a memory; the blood is still dripping off of your back.

How do we become different from those Mean Girls? If the unity as sisters in Christ is the bond weaving us together, I ask again: Does such a “drama free zone” exist? The truth is that it does exist!

A “sisterhood without the drama” is the very nature of Captured: a place where you can come as you are, without worry about looking like Kim Kardashian or fear of what others may think if mascara drips all over your face (of which I am a repeat offender!).

Captured is a place where you can find peace as you come in, leaving all of the drama thrown at you outside of the door; have heart-to-heart conversations; and most importantly, meet with God.

We are those girls sitting in the gymnasium who raise our hands, looking around as we see that we have all been hurt and have likely hurt someone else. So join in on the sisterhood, but leave the drama at the door. There’s a place of peace and community waiting for you.
